The greatest thing about staying with a friend who has come here for so long is that she knows all the local hangouts. Specifically, breakfast today was at Taco Haven. Delicious homemade tacos with fresh ingredients, really inexpensive and all locals, most speaking a Spanish. I’m happy to note that I understood most of the menu (in Spanish).

Kathi and me at the Mercado

The Mercado is 3 huge buildings filled with shops and jewelry stores. Definitely for tourists. I bought a 32 oz bottle of pure Mexican vanilla extract ($12), a ceramic bird for my windowsill bird collection, a ceramic light switch cover. All great deals, and just what I wanted — more shopping than I’ve done my whole trip.

We walked more along the river walk, this time downtown by all the tourist restaurants and hotels, ending up at the Alamo. I didn’t find it all that interesting but probably because the mission we visited yesterday had been reconstructed more and was more complete. But now I can say I’ve been to the Alamo.

Another happy hour, this time at the top of the Tower of Americas, down the street from Kathi’s house. Great food, strong drinks, and beautiful views of the city.

It’s been really fun hanging out with Kathi and she is a great tour guide!

What I learned today; 1. Mexican pure vanilla is cheap; and 2. Tacos for breakfast are great!
